Run for Rett – Purple Run
October is Rett Syndrome month and this year, because of lockdown, we are raising awareness by doing a virtual run/walk on the 24th of October.
A few of us will be meeting at Majik Forest at 8 am (top gate by the Spar). We would love it if you could join us there, the more the merrier. For those who are unable to get there, then walk/run wherever you are. Don’t forget to take photos or videos of your walk/run and post it to the Rett Facebook page or send it to me to post. Please be kind enough to donate whatever funds you can, to join in and of course wear purple in honour of our girls.
If you can join us is at Majik Forest you are welcome to bring cash on the day, just confirm with me so that I can bring you a run number.
If you are running/walking where you are, please email dionne@rett-sa.co.za for your race number and donate as per link.
Ultra Pro, the company I work for, will match every R100 up to the total value of R10 000. Please, everyone, help us get there.
CHOC – Childhood Cancer Foundation
In 2018 cancer impacted a lot of our people, good friends, and family were lost. We asked how we could make a difference? Kim & CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation) started chatting and this is the result…
We would like to thank the team, and specifically Tertia Hootsen, an amazing artist who volunteered and really made a difference!
How we got involved
A CHOC Volunteer contacted Ultra Pro asking for assistance in the form of Paint Donations in order to have their Plumstead home painted in the inside. A paint contractor had been out to visit the home and said that as it will be a very costly project, they would need to make some calls to get paint and he would just charge a labour fee.
I approached Gerhard Hootsen the owner of the company and asked if there was a possibility if Ultra Pro could go and paint the children’s home and if we could get paint donated from our supplier (Protech). Without hesitation or even thought he told me to get the project on the go……
The ultra Pro team all jumped in to help get the home painted as quickly as possible as there was limited time before the families returned. The choc home in Plumstead closes for a week just before Christmas.
It was truly amazing to be part of this project and being able to help.
Durbanville Children’s Home
The Durbanville Children’s Home fills the gap in service-provision for vulnerable children by using dedicated, professional services to support children in need of care and their families, with the ultimate aim of restoring them to healthy family relationships.
The Home is situated in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. The intake of children falls within a 100 km radius of Durbanville, which includes farms, informal settlements, squatter camps, and towns. The Durbanville Children’s Home is presently caring for 144 children between the ages of 2 – 18 years.

Good Luck Students
Last year was a tough year for so many families, we also feel for the children that can’t afford disruptions in their education … With schools starting again, families are facing difficult financial circumstances and may not be able to afford stationery. That is why each year we support the next generation by helping our staff with stationery needs for the academic year ahead.
Flamingo Rescue
Kimberly, South Africa – Due to low water resources, the Kimberly SPCA had to rescue over 1500 Flamingo abandoned chicks from Kamfers Dam in Kimberley. It took them hours to collect all the chicks but they managed to get them safely to a facility where they can be better cared for.
Some of the chicks were rescued as eggs and are now hatching into the great big world.
Why were they rescued?
The flamingoes were rescued from the Kamfersdam in Kimberley where a colony of lesser Flamingos breed annually. The dam has started to dry up leaving hundreds of young chicks in need of rescue. Thousands of chicks and unhatched eggs were collected and taken to the Kimberly SPCA where rehabilitation was started.
Thousands of chicks arrived at the SPCA and the task of caring for them started. Because there are so many and the task of caring for them is “around the clock” process, the SPCA reached out to various organisations in South Africa to take a few hundred each to care for. Flamingo Rescue
